Red squirrels and roe deer in the grounds around Squirrel Cottage

Wild life note book at Squirrel Cottage, Killiecrankie, in Highland Perthshire.

In Squirrel Cottage you will find a Wild Life Notebook, where guests log the different types of wild life they have seen during their stay. We thought it would be an idea to put these comments on line to give you an idea what people have seen during their stay.

Here you will read accounts about the wild birds you might see, red squirrels, and very rare Pine Martins which were seen on tow seperate occassions last summer. We are now starting to feed them peanuts, sunflower seed, and raisens in the hope to have them as regular visitors to Squirrel Cottage's wild life feeders.

We arrived at 4.45 straight away the squirrel came onto the feeders. The birds have been fantastic, even a woodpecker. The squirrels have been on the feeder everyday 8.30 & 4.30 and also on the feeder you see out of the Bedroom window. It has been a real pleasure to watch them, and we have some fantastic photos.
We will be back next year. Weather has been good, went to Gala night at Blair Atholl and had a good time, pipe bands and Scottish dancers
.

" This is our first visit to Squirrel Cottage, Killiecrankie. The variety of birdlife and wildlife is amazing. It doesn’t matter how many times you sit looking out of the windows into the garden you never see the same thing twice. There are so many different breeds of wild birds they’re too numerous to mention, but the jays and the greater spotted woodpecker deserve a mention. Onto the wildlife – red squirrels – who entertain everyday with different acrobatic display, and midway through the week ( Wed) a visit to the tree feeder box in front of the conservatory from a very rare animal – a pine marten. Our holiday here has been very relaxing indeed and would have been made even better by a bit more sunshine, but there again you can’t have everything. Thank you very much."

At peak times, 30-40 birds could be counted at each of the front feeders. With much activity in the trees and bushes, and at the other feeders, it is clear that well over 100 birds are being supported at the Coach House. Chaffinches dominate, even trying to master peanut feeders, with plenty of Great Tits and numerous Blue Tits, Coal Tits, Greenfinches and Siskins also appeared regularly. Four Jays were seen most days, and several wood pigeons. A couple of Great Spotted Woodpeckers were seen most days and a single robin was seen near the carport. Odd crows called in and plenty of buzzards could be seen in the surrounding area. Bats were seen leaving at dusk. Red Squirrels were frequently at all feeders, especially during the first of our weeks. Deer were easy to find on local walks, but none were seen in the garden. Pine Martins may have been around at about 6am, but none were seen.

25th AugAbout 20 Rooks descended on the front feeders, even attempting to cling to the peanuts. At least 3 Jackdaws mingled with them on the ground. They didn’t stay long, vanishing all as one, to be replaced by a Jay and a brave Great Tit.
