walking & hiking

from squirrel cottage

View over Glen Garry on the Tendandry walkThere are a number of walks from Squirrel self catering cottage in the Pitlochry area. Perhaps the most picturesque walk is through the Pass of Killiecrankie, a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and round via Tenandry Kirk. You can visit the National Trust Visitor Centre and see 'Soldier's leap' where it is alleged a Government soldier leapt the River Garry in 1789 after the Battle of Killiecrankie to flee the Jacobite soldiers pursuing him.

The photograph is from the top of the old RSPB Nature Reserve with early morning mist below in the glenAnother excellent walk is on to the old Killiecrankie Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) Nature Reserve (alas the reserve is no more as of the end of August 2004). Here there are two walks, giving spectacular views all round over Strathgarry Garry to Blair Castle and beyond. The walk is way marked by coloured posts. The walk has a steep climb, the path is good and not difficult. You will more than likely have the walk to yourselves.

The photograph is of walkers crossing a small bridge high up on the side of Ben Vrackie. The top of Ben Vrackie can be seen in the back groundAnother walk is over the shoulder of Ben Vrackie, or up to the top of Ben Vrackie 2,760ft, and down in to Pitlochry. This is another superb walk giving magnificent views of our highland scenery.

The photograph is taken in the early morning on the River Tummel, along the southern route to PitlochryAnother very enjoyable circular walk is in to Pitlochry and back down the Pass of Killiecrankie and round the north and then south side of Loch Faskally. This walk generally takes us about 5hrs in to and back from Pitlochry.

The photograph is of the River Garry from the Garry Bridge. This is the route to and from Pitlochry
