Squirrel Cottage, Self catering accommodation in Killiecrankie, Near Pitlochry in Highland Perthshire, Scotland.

Squirrel Cottage, offers a superb venue for your self catering holiday. Set in a secluded location in Killiecrankie, 3 miles equidistant from Pitlochry and Blair Atholl in Highland Perthshire. You will find this holiday self-catering cottage very well equipped. Read what our guests have to say.

Squirrel self catering cottage is for two people, ideal for those who just want to spend most of your time in the cottage relaxing, while its location at the geographic centre of Scotland makes it ideal for those who want to tour locally and further a field. The main A9 road is a five minute drive away on traffic free roads.

From Squirrel Cottage you have unspoilt views of the oak wood at the back of the cottage, the Alt Girnaig burn (stream) to the side and the formal garden and hills to the front. The Alt Girnaig (stream) and its waterfalls all add to the atmosphere of the location.

You will find a variety of different wild life from birds to mammals when you stay at Squirrel Cottage. Yes we have red squirrels which we feed through four squirrel feeders. So if you would like a red squirrel hoilday this is the place.

Grey Squirrels seen - alas!
Martin and Chris, regular guests in Squirrel Cottage, photographed a male Grey Squirrel the 2009 autumn. We passed the photo and information on to the local rangers, who tell us that each autumn grey males head up along river valleys looking for other colonies of greys. We have not sighted a greay since this sighting. This area of Highland Perthshire has a policy of preventing grey squirrels establishing themselves, so as to maintain our red squirrel population!

There are a whole range of walks from Squirrel Cottage, to Blair Atholl, through the Killiecrankie Pass, to Pitlochry and in the surrounding hills and Glens.

Squirrel Cottage is a superb self catering holiday cottage, with a large conservatory over looking the formal garden, surrounded by mature deciduous trees. It occupies the ground floor of the left wing in a traditionally built Coach House, set in a secluded location. It has a good sized living room, with a telephone, TV and DVD player. There is a wood pellet fire in the living room, easy to start and stop (press of a button), no mess clearing out the ash each day. There is a bio fireplace in the conservatory, the real flame adds to the warmth and atmosphere. The large single bedroom has plenty of cupboard space.

Squirrel Cottage is striclty non smoking, inside and outside. It is not suitable for children under 16 years old on account of the steep river bank to the Alt Girnaig burn that runs alongside the cottage. We keep the cottage free of all animals, for those with allergies.

The large conservatory at the front of the Squirrel Cottage, has proven to be very popular. There is a good sized dining room table and two cane rocking chairs and two foot stools in which you can relax and watch the birds at the feeders. There are two bird feeder points in the garden where you will often see a variety of birds from wood pigeons, collared doves, pheasants, jackdaws, woodpeckers, chaffinch, robins, black birds, blue tits, green finch and more coming to feed.

Wood pellet stove in Squirrel Cottage.

Wood Pellet Stove is the latest edition to Squirrel cottage
We fired it up this week, 11th February 2009 - all
seems well. So far so good. It is simple and easy to
switch on and off. No mess, cleaning, or fire lighters trying
to get it started. Just have to press a button for it to go and
the same button when you want it off. Wood pellets go in to
the hatch/flap at the top. We look forward to seeing what
you all think of it.

5 Stars or not!!!!!
We were awarded 5stars by the Tourist Board
iinspector on the 22/02/2006 for Squirrel Cottage.
At the end of May we were advised that for 5 stars
you need two inspection passes. So on the 6th June
along came another inspector who advised us Squirrel
Cottage is only 4 stars as the loo is not seperate to the
bathroom. Also the kitchen, although perfectly adequate
and comfortable for two people is not suitable for more
people. (How many people do you want in your kitchen to
help prepare the meal one asks? Even though Squirrel
Cottage only sleeps two.) Their reasoning is that you
might like to entertain lots of people when staying at
Squirrel Cottage.

Squirrel Cottage's marks from the Tourist Board
Assessors were 90%
.
5 Star accommodation requires a mark of 87% or better!!!

Red Squirrels - we have a large number of Red Squirrels.
One of our guests idenetified 16 different red squirrels
noting all their characteristics too!. Well worth a read in
our wild life obseravtion book.

We are now feeding Niger seeds, which has brought in
Siskins and Gold Finch to the garden, which are great
to see.

has a real flame, all adding to make for
cosy winter nights in. If you decide to
