Wildlife Update:-

Fallow deer at Squirrel Cottage Self catering PitlochryThe Fallow Deer was in the garden last night, so we have put out the extra winter feed, to attract her hopefully on a regular basis. Last winter she became very partial to our sugar beet horse feed which we soaked in warm water for her. We also have a young roe deer appearing regularly in and around Squirrel Cottage. This morning at 10.30am it was eating the ivy on the drive. (Updated 17th December 2011).

From Squirrel Cottage you have unspoilt views of the oak wood at the back of the cottage, the Alt Girnaig burn (stream) to the side and the formal garden and hills to the front. The Alt Girnaig (stream) and its waterfalls all add to the atmosphere of the location.

You will find a variety of different wild life from birds to mammals when you stay at Squirrel Cottage. Yes we have red squirrels which we feed through four squirrel feeders. So if you would like a red squirrel hoilday this is the place.

There are a whole range of walks from Squirrel Cottage, to Blair Atholl, through the Killiecrankie Pass, to Pitlochry and in the surrounding hills and Glens.

Squirrel Cottage is a superb self catering holiday cottage, with a large conservatory over looking the formal garden, surrounded by mature deciduous trees. It occupies the ground floor of the left wing in a traditionally built Coach House, set in a secluded location. It has a good sized living room, with a telephone, TV and DVD player. There is a wood pellet fire in the living room, easy to start and stop (press of a button), no mess clearing out the ash each day. There is a bio fireplace in the conservatory, the real flame adds to the warmth and atmosphere. The large single bedroom has plenty of cupboard space.

Squirrel Cottage is striclty non smoking, inside and outside. It is not suitable for children under 16 years old on account of the steep river bank to the Alt Girnaig burn that runs alongside the cottage. We keep the cottage free of all animals, for those with allergies.

The large sun-room at the front of the Squirrel Cottage, has proven to be very popular. There is a good sized dining room table and two cane rocking chairs and two foot stools in which you can relax and watch the birds at the feeders. There are two bird feeder points in the garden where you will often see a variety of birds from wood pigeons, collared doves, pheasants, jackdaws, woodpeckers, chaffinch, robins, black birds, blue tits, green finch and more coming to feed.

Conservatory to Sunroom - so we now have
a nice warm room all year round, for those autumn,
winter and spring breaks.

Updated 15th December 2010

Inside view of Squirrel Cottage Sunroom

Looking to front of the Sunroom

Conservatory to Sunroom - We have decided to
take the roof of the conservatory and put a solid
roof on, instead. The reason for this are two fold:-

  1. The conservatory is impossible to heat adequately
through the winter and more and more people are
staying here in the colder winter months.
  2. We have always had problems with the existing
    conservatory roof leaking.

We hope this will improve the comfort of the conservatory or
should I say Sunroom, while still retaining its all round aspect.

Red Squirrels - we have a large number of Red Squirrels.
One of our guests idenetified 16 different red squirrels
noting all their characteristics too!. Well worth a read in
our wild life obseravtion book.

We are now feeding Niger seeds, which has brought in
Siskins and Gold Finch to the garden, which are great
to see.
